Elmira, NY- The Pioneers entered play Saturday on their second five game winning streak of the season against the first pace Amsterdam Mohawks. Storms in the area didn’t stop Pioneers fans from turning out to Dunn Field as the over 2,000 fans helped push the season attendance mark over 40,000! The Pioneers would fall on the short side 7-2 on the historic night as Elmira surpassed the total season attendance mark of over 36,000 fans during the 2011 season.
The Mohawks would get to Elmira starter Dylan Waugh (Arizona Christian) early as Zac Colby (Faulkner) and Chase Green (SIU Edwardsville) would drive home a pair of runs in the first inning putting Amsterdam on top 2-0. Amsterdam would take 7-0 lead into the eighth inning as starter Mark Leiter Jr. (NJIT) had the Pioneers number on the night striking out 10 batters and scattering four hits.
Elmira would not be kept off the scoreboard as they would break through after battling all night by plating two runs off Amsterdam reliever Scott Heath (Maine). The Pioneers would load the bases in the eighth inning and with two outs Tyler McIntyre (Central Connecticut St.) drove a ball deep in the outfield scoring Kyle Coronel (Binghamton) and Stephen Clout (New Haven) to make it 7-2.
