Elmira, NY- Another packed house at historic Dunn Field came out on Monday night to watch the Pioneers take on the Newark Pilots. The Pioneers fell just short as the Pilots scored twice in the eighth inning en route to a 4-3 victory.
Elmira once again would score the games first run as Spencer Brann (UC Davis) scored Clark Wise (Wofford) from third base to make it 1-0. Elmira would keep their offense rolling early as Zac Bellinger (VCU) laced a ball up the middle to lead off the second inning. Kendall Konopka (Arizona Christian) would get the job done three batters later driving a ball into left and scoring Bellinger to make it 2-0.
The Pilots would work their way into the mix in the seventh inning as Josh Perez (Mississippi College) started things off with a single. Newark would score two runs in the inning to tie the game up 2-2 as Pioneers starter John Melville (New Haven) would pick up the no decision. Sean Osterman would drive in the eventual game winning runs for Newark as Sean Osterman (St. John Fisher) drove in two runs with a single to make it 4-2.
The Pioneers would try to claw their way back into the game in the home half of the eighth inning as Brann would drive in his second run of the night to make it 4-3. Elmira failed though to score the tying run as Ty Yesensky (Old Dominion) hit a fly ball to left field to end the inning.
Elmira hits the road for their next two games as they will face the Watertown Wizards on Tuesday and the Oneonta Outlaws on Wednesday.
