Elmira, NY- The Elmira Pioneers were able to wait-out Mother Nature on Sunday night as the Oneonta Outlaws made a stop at Dunn Field. The Pioneers would build an early lead against the outlaws but would need a home run from Tyler McIntyre (Central Connecticut) to secure the 8-6 victory.
The Pioneers would get on the scoreboard first against Outlaws starter Spencer Thomas (South Georgia) in the first inning as Kendall Konopka (Arizona Christian) would double off the centerfield wall and later score to make it 1-0. Three batters later Spencer Brann (UC Davis) would drive in another Pioneers score to make it 2-0. The Pioneers would score three runs overall in the inning giving starter Craig Pearcy (Morehead St.) some breathing room.
Elmira would be at it again in the second inning as Konopka laced a ball to the outfield for his second double of the night scoring two runners to make it 5-0. The Outlaws offense would come alive in the middle innings though as they would tally four times between the fourth and sixth innings to make it 6-4 Elmira.
Oneonta would rally one more time in the eighth inning as they would tie things 6-6 on a fielder’s choice allowing Orlando Rivera (State College of Florida) to score from third. McIntyre would give Elmira their final offensive surge that they would need in the bottom of the eighth as he clubbed his fourth home run of the season over the right field fence making it 8-6.
James Yacabonis (St. Joe’s) would enter in the ninth inning and pick up three consecutive outs to notch his fourth save of the season and give Elmira their 14th win of 2012. Elmira will be back at historic Dunn Field Monday, July 16 at 7:05 pm to take on the Newark Pilots on DeMet’s turtle toss night.
